If you have been putting off getting professional photos done for your business, I get it. I have heard every version of the hesitation.
“I don’t know what I actually need.”
“I’m not photogenic.” Or “I need to lose weight first.”
“I don’t want to spend money on something that won’t feel like me.”
These are real concerns. And honestly? They are exactly why I wanted to write this post. Because after working with multiple business owners on brand photography and headshots, there are a handful of things I wish every single one of them knew before we ever got on a call.
You do not have to have it all figured out before you reach out
This is probably the biggest one. So many business owners wait until they feel “ready,” Until the website is perfect, the brand is dialed in, the business feels established enough. But here is the truth: professional photos are not the finish line. They are the fuel that gets you there faster.
You do not need to have a perfectly polished brand before booking a session. You need photos that reflect where you are right now and where you are headed. We figure out the rest together in the planning process.

The camera does not lie, but neither does good photography
“I’m not photogenic” is something I hear constantly. And I always say the same thing: that is not a you problem, that is a photographer problem.
When someone does not like how they look in photos, it is almost always because the photos did not capture them. Instead, they captured a stiff, awkward version of them standing in front of a camera wondering what to do with their hands.
And then there is the other version I hear just as often: “I need to lose weight first.” I want to say this as clearly as I can, there is no version of you that is more worthy of being photographed than the one standing here right now. Your business needs you in it today, not a future version of you. The clients you are trying to reach need to see you and connect with you now. Good photography meets you where you are and shows the world what I already see. Someone confident, capable, and worth knowing.
My job is to make you forget the camera is there. The people who walk away from sessions saying “I actually love these” are not people who are naturally photogenic. They are people who felt comfortable, had fun, and were captured doing something real.
You will use more images than you think
Most business owners book a session thinking they need a headshot for LinkedIn and maybe one or two things for their website. Then they get their gallery back and suddenly realize they need images for Instagram, Facebook, email newsletters, speaking bios, podcast guest profiles, digital ads, print materials, and a dozen other places they hadn’t even thought about.
Professional photos have a way of unlocking content possibilities you did not know you had. Plan for more than you think you need. You will not regret it.

The planning conversation is half the session
The shoot itself is only part of what makes a great brand photography session. The planning call we have beforehand (where we talk through your business, your goals, your audience, your vibe), that is where the real work happens.
A great set of brand photos is not accidental. It is the result of intentional planning, the right locations, the right outfits, and a clear picture of what you actually need the images to do for your business. Come to that conversation ready to think out loud. It does not need to be a polished presentation, just an honest conversation.
You are allowed to have a point of view
Some business owners show up to a session ready to do whatever I tell them. And while I appreciate the trust, the best sessions happen when clients bring their own ideas, references, and preferences to the table.
You know your brand better than anyone. If you have a Pinterest board full of inspiration, bring it. Have a location in mind that feels like you, say so. If there is a shot you have seen someone else do that you love, share it. I am not trying to put you in a box. I am trying to capture YOU. The more you bring of yourself to the process, the better the result.

It is okay if it feels a little awkward at first
Most people feel a little self-conscious in the first ten minutes of a session. That is completely normal. We are not used to having a camera pointed at us while someone tells us we look great.
Give it a few minutes. Move around. Let yourself laugh at the weird prompts I give you. By the halfway point of almost every session, clients are relaxed, having fun, and producing the best images of the day. The awkward phase is just the warm-up.
