What to Wear for a Spring Family or Senior Session

April 13, 2026

Outfit planning is one of the things that stresses people out most before a photo session. And it really does not have to be. Figuring out what to wear is simple with this practical guide to help you feel confident and put-together without spending weeks overthinking it.

For Families — Start With One Person

Pick one person’s outfit first. I suggest choosing mom’s first and make sure it is something mom feels pretty and comfortable in. Then build everyone else around it. You are not looking for matching outfits. You are looking for coordinating ones. Think similar tones and a shared palette, not identical colors.

Neutrals, earthy tones, soft blues, cream, blush, and sage all photograph beautifully in spring. Avoid large logos, busy patterns, or neon colors. They pull attention away from faces and expressions, which is always where the magic is.

A Few More What to Wear Tips for Families

Dress for comfort, especially for little ones. If their outfit is stiff, itchy, or too formal, it will show in the photos. Choose something everyone actually feels good in. And always bring a backup outfit for kids. Spills happen and having an option in the car has saved many a session.

One more thing, if you have outfits chosen and the kids are not happy with the choice, do not let it ruin your session. Sometimes letting go of all the preparation and letting your family wear their most favorite thing makes for the most memorable and loved images. Even if your three year old insists on their Batman shirt and cape, just pivot and let everyone wear superheroes. That may have happened to us one year. And to this day those are some of my favorite images of my family.

For Seniors — Show Your Personality

Deciding what to wear is a huge one for seniors. Senior sessions are a chance to show who you actually are. So bring outfits that feel like you. A good rule of thumb is to bring three to four looks that range from casual to a little more dressed up. Think about the backgrounds and locations you want to shoot at and let that guide your color palette.

Solid colors and simple patterns tend to photograph best. Avoid anything with large text or logos across the front. Unless of course it is your college merch. Layers add dimension. A jacket, a flannel, a scarf, even cap and gown. They give us options without needing a full outfit change.

What to Avoid for Both

Skip brand new shoes if possible. Blisters mid-session are no fun. Avoid overly trendy pieces that will date quickly, and skip anything that does not fit well right now. Clothes that fit and feel good always photograph better than something that technically matches but feels uncomfortable. The camera will pick up on your discomfort.

When in Doubt About What to Wear — Ask

I send every client a style guide before their session and I am always happy to look at outfit photos ahead of time if you want a second opinion.

Spring and summer sessions are open for families and seniors across Placer County and the Palm Springs area. Send me a message or Book Here to get on the calendar.
